How to play 2048

Every move slides all the tiles as far as they can go in the direction you choose. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their sum — 2 + 2 makes 4, 4 + 4 makes 8, and so on up to 2048. Each merge adds the new tile’s value to your score. After every move, a new 2 or 4 appears in an empty square. When the board is full and nothing can merge, the game is over.

The corner strategy

Almost every high score uses the same idea: keep your biggest tile in one corner and build a chain of decreasing tiles next to it.

  1. Pick a corner — say bottom-left — and keep your largest tile there.
  2. Use mostly two directions (down and left in this example), with the third (right) when needed. Avoid the fourth (up), which pulls your big tile out of its corner.
  3. Keep the bottom row full so sliding left or right cannot move the corner tile.
  4. Build a snake. Arrange the bottom row in descending order (e.g. 512, 256, 128, 64) and continue the chain into the row above, so merges cascade toward the corner.

How long does it take?

Reaching 2048 takes roughly a thousand moves, so a winning game usually lasts 20–40 minutes. Your game is saved after every move, so you can stop and continue later. Want a shorter break? Try today’s daily word or a quick round of minesweeper.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 2048?

Use the arrow keys (or WASD, or swipe) to slide all tiles in one direction. Two tiles with the same number merge into one with their sum. After every move a new 2 or 4 appears. Reach a 2048 tile to win.

Can I keep playing after 2048?

Yes. Choose Keep going to aim for 4096, 8192 and beyond. The game ends only when the board is full and no merges are possible.

Is there an undo?

Yes, you can undo your last move with the Undo button or the U key — once per move, so you can’t rewind the whole game.

Is my game saved?

Yes. The board, your score and your best score are saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and continue later.

How are new tiles chosen?

After each move a new tile appears in a random empty square: a 2 nine times out of ten, and a 4 one time in ten.
