How unlimited mode works
The rules are the same as the daily word game: guess a five-letter word, and the tiles turn green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter that belongs somewhere else and grey for a letter that is not in the word. The difference is that every round picks a new random answer, so you can keep playing for as long as you want.
Use it to practice
Unlimited play is the fastest way to improve your daily score. Try out a new starting word for ten games and see how your average changes, or practise a two-word opening such as slate + crony or trace + lions, which together test ten of the most common letters.
| Letter | How often it appears in our 5-letter answers |
|---|---|
| E | About half of all answers |
| A, R | About 4 in 10 answers |
| T, S, O, I | About 3 in 10 answers |
| L, N, H, C, U | About 1 in 5 answers |
| J, Q, X, Z | About 1 in 100 — rarely worth testing early |
Ideas for playing with others
- Race: two players open this page at the same time and compare guesses (each gets a different word).
- Classroom warm-up: project the game and let the class vote on each guess.
- Pass the phone: take turns making one guess each until someone solves it.
More word games
Change the length with the 4 letter, 6 letter or 7 letter versions — each has its own daily word and its own unlimited mode.
Frequently asked questions
How many games can I play?
As many as you like. Every time you finish, press New word for another one — there is no daily limit and no waiting.
Are the words random?
Yes. Each game picks a random answer from our list of about 850 common five-letter words, so repeats are rare.
Does unlimited mode affect my daily streak?
No. Unlimited games have their own statistics. Your daily streak only counts the daily word, which you can play from the Daily tab or on the daily word game page.
Can I see the answer if I give up?
If you use all six guesses, the answer is revealed with a link to its dictionary definition, and you can start a new word straight away.
Can I play with my keyboard?
Yes. Type letters, press Enter to submit and Backspace to delete. On phones and tablets, use the on-screen keyboard.
